Seven Indonesians joined the 2010 list of the world’s billionaires issued by Forbes magazine, with brothers Michael Hartono and Budi Hartono sharing the top position as the richest Indonesians on the list.
Michael and Budi, who jointly own giant cigarette company PT Djarum Indonesia share the 258th place in the list, each with total wealth of US$3.5 billion, followed by Martua Sitorus, the owner of palm oil company Wilmar International in 316th place with total wealth of $3 billion.
Peter Sondakh, the owner of diversified conglomerate Rajawali Group, was in 437th place with net worth of $2.2 billion, while Sukanto Tanoto, the owner of business group Raja Garuda Mas was in 536th place with total wealth of $1.9 billion .
The five men have been on the list for several years. The last two Indonesian billionaires are Low Tuck Kwong, ranked 828th, and Chairul Tanjung, ranked 937th. Low, the owner of coal company PT Bayan Resources and Chairul, the owner of Para group with interests in banking, insurance and television, had fortunes of $1.2 and $1 billion, respectively. Both are newcomers to the list, released on Thursday.
China continues to lead the pack more than doubling its number of billionaires to 64 from 28 last year. India follows, with 49 billionaires up from 24 previously. Third is Hong Kong with 25 billionaires, followed by 22 from Japan, 18 from Taiwan, 11 each from Australia and South Korea, nine from Malaysia, seven from Indonesia, five from Kazakhstan, four from Singapore, three each from New Zealand and Thailand, two from the Philippines, and one from Pakistan.
The richest man in Asia-Pacific and fourth in the world is Mukesh Ambani, head of Reliance Industries.
Ranked seventh globally last year, the Indian national is valued at $29 billion, up almost 50 percent from $19.5 billion in 2009. Following closely is Lakshmi Mittal, chairman and CEO of ArcelorMittal. He is ranked fifth in the world, up from eighth last year. Mittal is worth $28.7 billion, up nearly 50 percent from $19.3 billion previously. The third richest in Asia-Pacific and number 14 globally is Li Ka-shing.
Claiming the top spot this year is Mexican telecom titan Carlos Slim Helu and family. They are worth $53.5 billion, up more than 50 percent on last year’s $35 billion. Bill Gates is now ranked in second position. The Microsoft founder is worth $53 billion, $13 billion more than last year. Slipping to third position from second last year is legendary investor Warren Buffet. He is worth $47 billion, an increase of $10 billion on his 2009 net worth.
