Police tighten surveillance in southern Aceh

Police in South Aceh, Aceh, say they have intensified their surveillance to prevent terror suspects from going out of the province through the western coastal highway in the area.

“Following the gunfight between police and a terror group in Leupung, Aceh Besar, we have intensified monitoring,” South Aceh Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Awi Setiyono said Saturday.

Antara state news agency reported that armed police personnel were setting up a number checkpoints on the regency's roads.

The news agency also reported that similar measures have been taken up by police in  Aceh Jaya, West Aceh, South West Aceh dan Subulussalam City.

Police killed Friday two terror suspects and arrested eight others in the latest raid in Aceh.

Friday’s raid took place near Leupung village, just outside the provincial capital Banda Aceh, where police engaged the 10 suspects while they were in a bus on the main road to Meulaboh. A 30-minute gunfight ensued in which two suspects were killed attempting to flee.

Authorities have arrested 30 and killed six suspected militants in the crackdown.

Police have aso tightened surveillance at Bakauheni port and several regencies in Lampung including East Lampung, South Lampung, North Lampung and Tulangbawang.
