A 66-year-old Japanese man drowned Saturday while swimming off the Bintan Lagoon Resort, Riau islands with his friend.
Bintan Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr YS Widodo said Sunday the Japanese tourist, identified as Yuji Kaido, died 10 minutes after the incident, while his friend, Sahathai, 38, from Thailand survived.
"At 4 p.m. on Saturday, they went to swim in the sea. Thirty minutes later they yelled for help," he said as quoted by kompas.com.
Lifeguards managed to take them back to the beach, but unfortunately Kaido could not be revived.
