Letter: Feeding the world

I refer to an article titled “Indonesia aims to feed the world by
2030,” (the Post, Feb. 22) with five commodities like cocoa, palm oil,
rice, coffee etc.
In spite of having very fertile land, Indonesia is not able to produce
excess of corn, sugar, wheat etc. Countries like Brazil are the king of
sugar exports. Australia and Canada are the kings in wheat exports. Not
to mention Argentina/the US are exporting soya beans to Indonesia.
Tofu and tempeh are the basics foods of Indonesia and there remains an
insufficient soya bean production. Even Egypt and Turkey are behind in
producing wheat flour and in fact import wheat from other nations.
Most of the sugar mills in Indonesia are non-operative. A simple corn
grits (fodder used to feed poultry) made from corn is having only one
to two factories in Indonesia and whose prices are sky rocketing.
Will someone guide the concern departments about this before the ministers make a claim of being a feeder to the world?
