JAKARTA: An office at the Manpower and Transmigration Ministry reported
Monday that it had deported 19 foreign workers from entertainment,
banking and manufacture sectors for visa violation.
The ministry, however, did not specify the nationalities of the deported.
“Most misused their tourist visas to work here. The other cases related
to violations of manpower regulations,” I Gusti Made Arka, director
general of manpower monitoring, said.
He said his office would heighten monitoring of foreign workers
following the implementation of the ASEAN China Free Trade Agreement
(ACFTA). He said the ACFTA would likely prompt the increase of
foreigners who used tourist visas to work in Indonesia.
The monitoring will focus on areas with high reports of visa violation
such as Batam, Greater Jakarta, North Sumatra, East Java, South
Sulawesi and areas in Kalimantan, Arka said.
He also said the ministry had filed a lawsuit against two companies
that employed the illegal workers following the deportation. Both were
located in North Sumatra, he said. — JP
