JAKARTA: Following enactment of the new environmental law, PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), a subsidiary of state oil and gas company PT Pertamina plans to spend US$10 million to drill two injection wells to dispose of its liquid waste.
The new law requires high environmental standards for liquid waste, including limiting the temperature of waste and the concentrations of pollutants in it. PGE president director Abadi Poernomo said the new law would require geothermal producers to spend extra money upgrading their waste management facilities. The oil and gas industry has urged implementation of the law be delayed, saying production could fall by up to 50 percent. - JP
