A National Commission on Human Rights team quizzed South Sulawesi Police chief Insp. Gen. Adang Rochjana Wednesday in connection with a recent attack on the Islamic Students Association (HMI) secretariat, which sparked nationwide protests against the police.
Adang said after the questioning he explained to the rights commissioners the chronology of the incident, what had caused it and the ensuing protests from the students which turned violent.
“We explained everything in detail, including the way we dealt with the incident,” Adang said.
He asked the rights body team, led by Johny Nelson Simanjutak, to launch an investigation into the students’ raid on a police office and patrol cars.
“Human rights apply to everybody. Whoever violates human rights must be investigated,” Adang said.
The rights commissioners also quizzed the Makassar Police chief and HMI activist Ashari Setiawan, alias Kamma Cappi, who fought with counterterrorism squad member Adj. Insp. Sutriman. The dispute between Ashari and Sutriman is believed to have sparked the police raid on the HMI office on March 3.
