BANDUNG: Justice and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar says that
next year the project to build a detention center that will determine
inmate rooms’ designs according to their crimes may commence.
“The government program [for the project] has been made but it has not
been realized yet. It may commence in 2011,” he said Tuesday in Bandung
as quoted by Antara.
The program will place inmates inside the detention center according to
the type of crimes they commit such as terrorism, corruption or murder.
The ministry’s directorate general for detention centers currently
places a combination of inmates with various criminal backgrounds
together.
As of this year, the recorded number of inmates in the country was 131,209.
The country’s detention centers, which have many problems such as
low-nutritious meals and overcrowding, sometimes have economically
advantaged inmates who use their wealth to ensure better living
conditions. A recent example was the well-equipped cell of bribe
convict Artalyta Suryani. — JP
