Observers have expressed suspicion of the recent crackdown on terrorist suspects as part of the government’s efforts to distract the public’s attention from the high-profile Bank Century case.
“I believe the police detected the terrorists’ whereabouts a long time ago. Why have they decided to exploit the issue in public now?” University of Indonesia lecturer Boni Hargens told a discussion at the Regional Representatives Council on Wednesday.
“The crackdown on terrorists must not be used to cover up political sins.”
House of Representatives defense commission member Hidayat Nur Wahid from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) suggested that the police immediately crush the terror cells to prevent speculation on the political interest behind police operations.
