Kediri regency administration in East Java has warned of the risk of landslides for people residing on the slopes of Wilis mountain, asking them to evacuate their houses during heavy rainfall.
Eko Setiono, a spokesman for the regency, said Thursday the warning was issued following a disaster mitigation team had found that hundreds of houses in the area were built on slopes with more than a 60 degree inclination.
“We have put the area on high alert,” he said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
On Wednesday, a landslide hit two houses in Belo hamlet in Banyakan district in the same mountainous area.
The regency has issued a landslide warning for 11 locations in the area, including Mojo Semen Banyakan and Tarokan districts on the slopes of Mount Wilis; and Grogol, Ngancar, Kandangan, Puncu, Plosoklaten, Wates and Ngancar on the slopes of Mount Kelud.
