The lack of qualified teachers in Indonesia’s school system makes it almost impossible to produce competent future leaders toward betterment of the country, Director of Sampoerna School of Education, Kenneth Cock, told a seminar at the National Department of Education in Jakarta on Friday.
“Most of teachers at schools don’t perform their main duties as a leader in the class,” Cock said, adding that good teachers not only had to teach leadership, theory but also had to directly set good leadership examples for the students.
Retired general Soemarno Soemarsono, who also spoke at the seminar, said that leadership could not be taught solely as theory, it had to come from good examples that students directly saw in their daily lives.
“That is why before we create competent future leaders we first have to create qualified teachers who understand what leadership is,” he said. (rdf)
