Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chief patron Taufik Kiemas says that his idea to establish a coalition with its old foe, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Democratic Party, is based on the sentiments arising from within his party's grass roots.

"Pak Taufik would not dare bring up the idea unless there was support from the grass roots," he said, referring to himself at the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Monday.

Taufik, however, could not give any clear measurement on how widespread this support for the coalition was.

"There has been no time to conduct a survey. I simply listened to the wishes of the grass roots and decided to raise the issue," he said.

Taufik said that he had discussed the issue directly with his wife and PDI-P chairwoman, Megawati Soekarnoputri, who is known to be determined to maintain an opposition stance.

"The chairwoman said to let the upcoming congress decide, and I think that is the correct way to do it," he said.

The PDI-P congress is scheduled to take place from April 6 to April 9 in Bali.
