Dozens of unidentified people threw rocks at an outlet of French-based hypermarket chain Carrefour on Jl. Perintis Kemerdekaan in Makassar on Tuesday, possibly related to a rally against President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s visit to the South Sulawesi capital city.
The attack smashed the window pane of a security post and a display window of a perfume counter. It also damaged a parked car in the hypermarket compound.
“I heard noisy sounds. When I checked it out, I saw the mass throwing rocks [at Carrefour],” said Halijah, 30, who owns a ceramic counter in the hypermarket’s front hall.
Perpetrators of the attack looked like protesters returning from a demonstration as they sported black clothing and carried protest banners, she added.
Yudhoyono visited Makassar for the opening of the Nahdlatul Ulama congress.
