State postal company PT Pos Indonesia is aiming for 35 percent of its revenue this year to come from monetary services.

The company’s managing di-rector, I Ketut Mardjana, said of Rp 3 trillion (US$300 million) of the company’s target revenue, Rp 1 trillion would be derived from monetary services.

The target revenue from monetary services this year had risen compared to previous years: 31 percent in 2009 and 28 percent in 2008.

“To meet the target revenue, 57 percent of the revenue will come from mailing services, 8 percent from logistics and 35 percent from monetary services,” Mardjana said.

Pos Indonesia has increased spending to Rp 500 billion this year, a five-fold increase from last year.

“It won’t be possible for us to increase our revenue without raising investment value. That’s why we will increase our spending, most of which will be used to improve the information technology system to improve our performance.”

Mardjana said the IT system should be able to facilitate customers when transferring money up to remote areas and overseas, while the post office would provide instant postal money orders for domestic customers.

“We will also provide the electronic postal money order service like the cell phone vouchers.”

The company is currently preparing a door-to-door service involving postmen who will be equipped with electronic devices when they visit the homes of customers requiring postal services, such as getting pension funds.

“We hope an improved IT system could improve cost efficiency within PT Pos, such as better office automation to reduce inter-departmental documents,” Mardjana said.

Mardjana said the company’s network was extensive, but 70 percent was still cost oriented, so it should be able to become profit-oriented by enhancing utilization.

“For example, PT Pos Indonesia will introduce Posmart as a shopping service by working together with the Indomaret and Alfamart retailers.”

The company also plans to improve to make post offices a more comfortable place for customers.

“We currently have 3,700 post offices and 24,000 outlets, including agents and partnerships with other establishments, such as cooperatives and banks,” Mardjana said.
