Police in Penjaringan subprecinct, North Jakarta, have since January run a library from the station building in a bid to win hearts and minds in the local community.

“We hope the public, particularly low-income people, will benefit from the library,” said Penjaringan Police deputy chief Adj. Comr. Febriansyah.

He added the facility was also expected to serve as a “source of knowledge” for police officers.
The library is a pilot project built in cooperation with the Kick Andy Foundation.

Several other subprecinct and precinct police stations will also get libraries as an extension of the
project.

Penjaringan resident and local schoolteacher Rokhiyah, on her second visit to the new library, said she enjoyed reading books there.

“They’ve got a big collection, and the room’s pretty comfortable,” she said.

The only drawback, she added, was that visitors were not allowed to check the books out, and had to read them there.

Fifth-grader Riyanti said she had heard about the library from a friend and had been there seven times.

“I usually read for 30 minutes to an hour,” she said.

The air-conditioned library, first opened on Jan. 25, carries more than 1,000 titles, ranging from children’s stories to general interest books on literature, management, law, politics, religion and spirituality, some of them in English.

The library is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, and from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturdays. (lnd)
