Around 500 villagers of Rek Kerrek village, Palengaan, Pamekasan, in East Java, staged a protest Friday burning and throwing PT SPE Petroleum mining equipment into a river.

The villagers, who also forced the company’s security guards out of the village during the protest, said that the mining company had never requested a permit for a seismic test.

“The mining company are going to drill our land [to obtain a seismic test], but they did not ask us for permission,” Syamsul Arifin, a villager, said as quoted by news portal tempointeraktif.com.
