Two arrested in Jakarta airport for drug smuggling

Customs and excise office of Soekarno Hatta Airport in Tangerang have detained two Malaysian nationals for allegedly smuggling a total of three kilograms of crystal methamphetamine into the country.

Bahaduri Wijayanta, customs office chief at the airport, said Friday that the two suspects were found with the drug, locally known as shabu-shabu, wrapped around their waist during an X-ray scan.

“The two suspects testified they would be paid RM 16,000 should they handed the drugs to someone in Jakarta. They are allegedly part of an international drug syndicate,” Bahaduri said.

He said the suspects arrived on a Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong on Thursday afternoon.

“We had received prior information about the two suspects before they flew to Jakarta so that officers conducting profile analyses against passengers at the terminal could easily locate them,” Bahaduri said.

He said the suspects would be charged with violating Article 113 of the 2009 law on drugs. The Article carries a maximum penalty of death.

The airport’s customs officers have so far managed to foil 20 drug smuggling attempts since January. They seized a total of 70.8 kilograms of shabu,shabu, 668 grams of heroin, 163 grams of cocaine, 37 kilograms of katamine and 14.4 kilograms of marijuana.worth a total of Rp 183 billion.
