UNICEF, AJI award writers covering children's plight

JAKARTA: UNICEF and the Independent Journalists Association (AJI) have recognized four journalists for their works on the plight of children.

M. Azis Tunny won the print media category with a feature story titled "Child Ex-Combatants: The unhealed trauma", a reflection of the 11th anniversary of the Ambon conflict that narrates how children cope with the trauma from the deadly sectarian conflict. The story was run by local daily Koran Rakyat Tenggara. Tunny is also a Jakarta Post stringer.

Shinta Ardhany of KBR68H won the radio category with a report titled "Arranged Marriage in Central Sumba".

Irfan Radyad and Soraya Djufril of globaltv won the TV category award for their report on street children, "A story from the street".

The awards began in 2006 and are aimed at encouraging the media to focus more coverage on children. -JP
