Infrastructure deputy at the National Development Planning Ministry Deddy S. Priatna announced that construction of the Sunda Strait Bridge would likely start at the beginning of 2012.

“At the beginning of 2012, (the construction of the bridge) will start... and is scheduled to be completed in 2017 or 2018,” Deddy said after a coordination meeting at Coordinating Economics Ministry in Jakarta, on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.

According to Deddy the construction of the Sunda Strait Bridge required various preparations, including a feasibility study and the bridge's design. “The feasibility study requires at least 1.5 years to make and its design will be prepared by 2012,” he said.

He explained that a national team for the construction for the Sunda Strait Bridge had been established in line with a presidential decree. “It will be followed up with the establishment of a working group under a decree from the coordinating economic minister. It will likely be published next week,” he added.
