The Jakarta High Court upheld on Wednesday a lower court’s conviction of businessman Hengky Samuel Daud in a graft case and increased his jail sentence by three years to18 years.

The high court’s spokesman, Andi Samsan Nganro, said the panel of judges decided on a harsher punishment because the value of state losses resulting from the case was considered very high, the defendant had sparked public’s distrust in the state for involving many high-level officials in the case and had blackmailed the officials to smooth his business.

Andi was among five judges assined to hear an appeal filed by Hengky, who was sentenced to 15 years in jail by the Corruption Court in February of this year.

A number of former governors, regents and mayors were found guilty in the illegal procurement of fire trucks recommended by the Home Ministry in 2004.

Then home minister Hari Sabarno, however, remains at large despite his alleged role in the corruption case.

The high court also upheld Rp 500 million in fine and Rp 82.64 billion in restitution to the state imposed by the Corruption Court on Hengky.
