JAKARTA: Singer Oppie Andaresta is proud to have completed one of her must-do projects this month: An album dedicated to Indonesian women, titled Tentang Perempuan (About Women).
Oppie, with the support of her singer friends Tere, Sania and Melanie Subono, released the album recently to commemorate Kartini Day on April 21, the day national heroine Kartini was born.
“With this album, we want to promote gender equality and fight discrimination [against women],” said Oppie, who put together the album as part of her duty as an ambassador for a foundation. “We want to show that Indonesian women are tough — for example, many of them have become journalists and we also have one who was once a president.”
Oppie added that the proceeds generated from the album would go to charity programs as the project was not for commercial purposes.
“All the money generated will go to six non-governmental organizations that finance women-related programs,” she said as quoted by newsportal okezone.com.
Oppie also said the album wouldn’t be sold in music stores, but would be distributed through the multi-level marketing network of a women accessories company.
“I’m hoping that women will join forces and more will get involved in a bigger [project] after this,” she said, adding it only took her one month to finish her project. “This album was easy to put together, as we are not selling anything, just promoting positive messages.” — JP
