Democratic Party politician: Boediono is safe from impeachment

A Democratic Party legislator says Vice President Boediono was safe from any possible moves to impeach him despite many legislators signing a petition requesting the House of Representatives use its opinion right, the initial part of an impeachment process.

“The possibility of the House using such a right is small,” Ramadhan Pohan said Friday.

“The regulation stipulates that the opinion right can only be endorsed during a plenary session attended by at least 75 percent of House members,” he added.

The right was the follow-up to the House’s final recommendations on the investigation of the Bank Century bailout case.

In early March, the House voted that the bailout policy was flawed and recommended that key decision makers in the bailout be legally processed.

The policy was issued in November 2008 by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and then Bank Indonesia governor Boediono, who is now Vice President.

Following the House’s official recommendation, there was speculation that Mulyani would be ousted and that Boediono would be impeached.

“Only 58 percent of legislators voted against the bailout. So, it is very difficult to endorse the opinion right,” Ramadhan said.
