Some 500 Jakarta residents may be affected by a series of evictions planned by the city administration for this year, an executive of the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH Jakarta) said Sunday.

"500 residents are at risk of being evicted this year," Edy Halomoan Gurning said as quoted by detik.com.

The eviction plans are related mostly to land acquisition projects, such as the construction of the East Flood Canal, condominiums and the mass rapid transit system.

The city administration has allocated Rp 1.198 trillion (US$132.9 million) from its 2010 budget to acquire plots of land for 42 projects.

Included is Rp 371 billion to clear land for the East Flood Canal, Rp 74 billion for condominiums in Daan Mogot, West Jakarta, and Rp 60 billion for land acquisition for the planned mass rapid transit system.
