Any attempt to divert  public attention from the Bank Century bailout scandal will be futile because the House of Representatives will strongly maintain its position, a lawmaker said on Sunday.

“The Team of Nine [legislators who initiated the recent inquiry into the government’s decision to bailout the ailing bank in 2008] will do everything to make sure that the government do what the House is demanding it to,” said Bambang Soesatyo of the Golkar Party.

The inquiry concluded that government’s decision to spend Rp 6.7 trillion ($716 million) to save the ailing bank was not justified. The House demanded investigation into related criminal acts.

Some legislators have looked at the possible impeachment of Vice President Boediono, the then Bank Indonesia governor, who made the bailout policy decision along with Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati.

Bambang said he saw apparent attempts to divert public attention from the Century scandal, such as the high-profile case on brokerage implicating police officers, prosecutors, judges, lawyers and businessmen.

“We have formed a team in charge of watching every step the government takes to settle the bailout case,” Bambang said.

“Besides, we proved our seriousness about the bailout scandal by boycotting a hearing with the Finance Minister last week.” he said as quoted by Antara.
