Teja Aria Putra, a flight instructor at the Indonesian State Aviation School's (STPI) Budiarto airbase in Curug, has to give up both of his legs to save his life following a deadly accident on Monday.
“Both Teja’s legs could no longer be maintained and there was no other way to save his life,” school principal Darwis Amini told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday, adding Teja’s parents had approved the amputation.
Teja and his student Supaskah Abdillah were rushed to Siolam Glenagles Hospital in Karawaci, Tangerang after a training plane they were aboard hit a motorcycle that was crossing the airbase runway on Monday morning.
Two people on the motorcycle, Yofie hermawan, a senior high student and Azumar, a minimarket employee, died instantly.
Teja suffered serious wounds to his both legs while Supaskah were badly injured to his head. Since they were admitted to the hospital, both Teja and Supaskah have not regained consciousness.
Darwin said the school had temporally put a halt flying exercise, pending clearance of the airbase.
