Samaranch still in 'very serious condition'

Former International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch remains in a "very serious condition" in an intensive care unit at a hospital in Barcelona.

The 89-year-old Spaniard, who was admitted on Sunday after experiencing heart trouble, had shown no signs of improvement or deterioration overnight, Quiron Hospital spokesman Carlos Segui said Wednesday.

Samaranch, who remains sedated and on a respirator, would undergo further tests Wednesday.

A doctor earlier said he "cannot be optimistic" of Samaranch recovering due to his age and chronic problems, but added it was a good sign he had survived 48 hours.

Samaranch headed the IOC from 1980-2001.
