tate-owned mining company PT Aneka Tambang (Antam) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with state-owned solar cell producer PT LEN Industri to build small-scale solar power facilities in six villages in eastern Halmahera, North Maluku.
The project is part of Antam’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) program, the company said on its website.
The MoU was signed by Antam president director Alwin Syah Loebis and LEN president director Wahyudin Bagenda on March 31, 2010 in Jakarta.
“The MoU is part of Antam’s strategy to contribute actively in the development of the surrounding communities by providing electricity in remote areas.
With the signing of the MoU, we expect the synergy between Antam and PT LEN will help build harmonious relations with stakeholders,” Antam CSR and general affairs director Denny Maulasa said.
The facilities will generate electricity for public facilities, such as government offices, schools, religious facilities, community healthcenters and street lighting.
Antam expects the program will cost Rp 1.4 billion (US$156,000), which includes feasibility studies, installation of solar powered generators as well as an information campaign on the use and maintenance of the facilities.
PT LEN will appoint its subsidiary PT Surya Energi Indotama (PT SEI) to conduct the program. — JP
