Govt urged to shift focus on adaptation actions

The government should shift its priority of adaptation measures to help local people adjust themselves to extreme changes of climate, now that many farmers and fishermen have been forced to change jobs to survive.

Green activists raised the call during the Earth Day celebration at the Ismail Marzuki Cultural Park in Central Jakarta on Thursday.

“Many of local people have been “bleeding” because of unpredictable climate changes while the government is still busy seeking foreign fund to mitigate the climate change,” Nadia Hadad from Bank Information Center told reporters.

She urged the government to push rich nations to provide adaptation fund to Indonesia.

Indonesian Environmental Forum (Walhi) chief campaigner Teguh Surya added that the government should map the main sources of income of local people to determine eligible recipients of the adaptation fund.
