Police claim to take actions against Busway lane interceptors

Jakarta Traffic Police chief Sr. Comr. Condro Kirono denied accusations that his officers did nothing to prevent vehicles from intercepting the exclusive lanes allocated for the Transjakarta buses.

"We do ticket the offenders. But during peak hours, we take actions against the huge number of violators, who outnumber our personnel," Condro said during a meeting with members of Transjakarta communities on Thursday.

Data from the city police revealed that 23,743 motorists were ticketed for entering the Busway lanes last year, down by almost 40 percent from 38,962 in the previous year.

Condro asked the community members to actively participate in preventing the motorists from the exclusive lanes.

"Please take pictures of the cars and motorcycles that enter the lanes as well as their vehicle registration numbers. You can have them published in the media," he said.

When asked about the solution to the exclusive lanes matter, Condro said the city should men the infrastructure, including semi-automatic portals and separator of the lanes.

“The portals should be located only in corridors which are deemed a priority,” he said, adding that the city should improve the dangerous short separators that are unseen at night.

M. Akbar, the traffic management head at the city’s Transportation Agency, said this year the agency would install 25 boom gates on Busway to bar vehicles.
