A group of state universities will hold a joint student admission test which, unlike in the past, will focus on the reasoning ability of applicants.

Eko Budiharjo of the Association of National State University Admission Test (P-SPMBN), said on Thursday this year’s joint admission test, or UMB, would hold the test on May 22 to select around 10,300 students.

“This year, the test is more about reasoning… What is judged is the ability of the students to complete their education in their choice universities by using their reasoning,” he said.

About 90,000 students are expected to take the test across the country this academic year.

There will be 12 state universities taking part in the UMB, up from seven last year.

Apart from UMB, a student can take the State Universities' National Entrance Exams (SNMPTN) conducted by the state, scholarships and tests conducted by individual universities to secure a seat in a state university.

University of Indonesia spokesperson Vishnu Juwono said this year's quota for those entering through the UMB and SNMPTN had been set at 15 percent, while the rest would be accepted through tests held by individual universities, excellence recognition and other methods. (dis)
