PLN to supply Bali with additional 200 megawatts

DENPASAR: State power monopoly PT PLN said it would increase the supply of electricity to Bali to help the province deal with chronic power shortages that have resulted in frequent and rolling black outs.

Under the plan, Bali will receive up to 200 megawatts (MW) of additional power.

"This additional power will be made available by laying two undersea cables to channel electricity from power plants in Java," Agung Mastika, the spokesman for PLN's Bali branch, said.

Presently, there are two undersea cables carrying up to 100 MW each. "Hopefully, the construction of the additional cables will begin this year," Mastika said.

He added that the company opted for this solution rather than the alternative of building a new power plant in Bali.

"In the long run, however, Bali will need to rely on its own plants to ensure a secure and uninterrupted power supply." - JP
