The National Aeronautics and Space Agency (Lapan) concluded after coordinating with the forensic laboratory that last week’s blast in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, had been caused by a meteorite crashing into one of the three devastated houses from the southwest direction.
Lapan’s astronomy researcher Thomas Djamaluddin said that there were strong indications that the collision had been that of a meteorite, according to a press statement received by The Jakarta Post on Monday.
“The heat exposure showed that the object came with high speed and heat,” Thomas said.
Currently, the investigators in the site are yet to discover the meteorite fragments.
Lapan and the forensic laboratory called for reports should anyone discovered any strange objects among the rubbles.
Thomas said that there was no need for residents to worry about the objects because he said they did not contain any poisonous or radioactive substance.
