PHS denied tax evasion allegation

Palm oil firm PT Permata Hijau Sawit (PHS) denied it ever submitted fictitious tax invoices worth Rp 300 billion (US$33 million) to evade tax, as alleged by the Finance Ministry.

PHS urged the ministry to request the Financial Transactions Report and Analysis Center to open the flow of funds from the company to its suppliers, director Jhonny Virgo said in a statement Tuesday.

"The ones issued and used fictitious tax invoices were our suppliers, which have been proven guilty by the North Jakarta District Court and South Jakarta District Court," he said.

The company also claimed the state owed Rp 530 billion in tax restitution, which had yet to be paid for almost three years.

PHS requested a 10 percent restitution between August 2007 and June 2008 to the first North Sumatra district tax office for the purchase of palm oil to be exported abroad.

On Monday Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said the ministry found a new scheme of tax evasion by making fictitious invoices of value added tax, costing the state hundreds billion in losses. PHS is among the companies investigated by the ministry.
