A- A A+

May 3, Online: A motorcyclist died Monday after he was hit by a speeding Transjakarta bus on Jl. Kwitang in Senen, Central Jakarta.
The city police’s Traffic Management Center reported that the accident happened at 11 a.m.
Adj. First Insp. Yoko, an officer in Central Jakarta Police, said the incident occurred when the front wheel of the victim’s motorbike became entangled in the busway separator as he swerved in order to avoid collision with other motorcyclists in front of Gunung Agung bookstore.
The victim could not maintain his balance and fell into the busway lane as a speeding Transjakarta bus was coming, and the bus hit him.

It is common; motorcyclists want to be prioritized. Look at every crossroads or in jammed streets, motorcyclists feel it is acceptable for them take every lane, even though it is not supposed to be for them.
Ironically, the police are causing this disorderly behavior to increase. Giving priority to a motorcyclist is understandable. But, prioritizing every motorcyclist on the road is a ridiculous policy.
The law should be a social engineering tool. However, we find the police in Greater Jakarta prefer to enforce the law on toll roads rather than to enforce the law for motorcyclists or public transportation
drivers.
We definitely need a new police chief who is committed to law enforcement for lower-, middle- and upper-classes of people – even though it may affect his interests or hobbies.

It sounds like the bus driver’s fault, as he did not allow a safe distance between the bus and the bike, i.e. an emergency stopping distance. It sounds like the police are not aware of this common-sense driving rule.
