The Denpasar District Court has sentenced 26-year old David Goltar Wicaksono to 20 years in prison for murdering Japanese woman Rika Sano in September 2009.
Presiding Judge Dewa Made Wenten said Wicaksono had been proven guilty of violating criminal law No. 339 on premeditated murder and violence.
The defendant was also judged to have violated Law No. 289 on sexual assault and robbery.
"The defendant's actions have depressed the victim's parents, who lost their only daughter," the judge said.
Wicaksono also tried to sexually assault Sano's friend Mayumi Somey.
"His wrongdoings have tarnished the image of Bali as a safe tourist destination," the judge said.
Previously, the prosecutor demanded a life sentence for the defendant.
The defendant received a lighter punishment because he was well behaved during the trial session.
Wicaksono has apologized to the victim's parents and officials at the Japanese Consulate Office in Denpasar.
Wicaksono said he would consider whether he would appeal the verdict.
"I am still thinking about it," the defendant said.
The murder of Japanese national Rika Sano has tainted the local tourist industry.
Japanese tourists are the second biggest visitor group to the island after Australians.
The Japanese government has called on the provincial authorities to tighten security at tourist destinations on the island and demanded the local administration provide protection for Japanese tourists holidaying on Bali.
Rika Sano was murdered last September in the Kuta area. Wicaksono, pretending to be a police officer, reprimanded Sano's friend Somey while she was driving a motorcycle.
Wicaksono then followed Somey to her homestay near Kuta.
There, he dragged Somey into some bushes and sexually assaulted her. However, Somey was able to escape.
Wicaksono then went back to Somey's homestay, where he found Sano. He took Sano to a quiet place and killed her. He took Sano's belongings including money, mobile phone and ipod.
The defendant was arrested in October 2009 in Malang, East Java, where he had been hiding.
