Letters: We are not confident in our language

A- A A+

We cannot blame teachers and facilities on the poor the score of Bahasa Indonesia in the National Exams (UN), (the Post, April 28). It can be an indication that there is a shift of attention among the students.

I believe the trend is connected with the new policy of school standardization. The opening of international standard schools (RSBI/SBI) in state schools that use English in the teaching learning process may trigger the change of paradigm among the students.

They tend to study English more than Bahasa Indonesia because they think that English is more important for their future. The question is: Are we heading in the right direction? More developed Asian countries like China and Japan prefer to preserve their own languages.

Many countries learn their language. They are proud to use Chinese and Japanese worldwide. Like them, we also have a commanding position in the region and the world. But why do we lack the confidence in introducing our national language to the world?
