Residents of Banda Aceh returned to home after the province’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) called off a tsunami alert following a 7.2-magnitude earthquake centered 66 kilometers southwest of Meulaboh on Sunday afternoon.
News portal kompas.com reported that the earthquake, which occurred at around 1 p.m., caused panic among residents living in coastal areas, reminiscent of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
Residents had fled from their homes by motorcycle or in cars, causing severe traffic congestion at the Surabaya Intersection in Banda Aceh.
