Bali provincial administration has provided Rp 46
Bali provincial administration has provided Rp 46.88 billion to support 2,344 subak traditional agriculture organizations.
Deputy Bali Governor A.A. Ngurah Puspayoga said the funds were aimed at revitalizing the subak system in Bali, which is currently under threat from the island's rapid development.
The subak system, used by Balinese farmers for centuries, is based on a harmonious balance between humans and the earth as well as the Creator. The system allows farmers to regulate their irrigation systems, planting seasons and manage customary activities in each village in Bali.
Subak organizations bring together members to discuss and resolve any problems regarding their farming activities.
"This is part of the province's *Go Organic and Green Economy' programs," Puspayoga said. The programs were in February this year by Bali administration with support from the United Nations Environmental Programme.
During a recent meeting, the World Tourism Organization (WTO) nominated Bali as a model for Green Economy projects.
"Subak is really in line with sustainable farming system, currently promoted by world environmental organizations and activities," Puspayoga said.
In addition to revitalizing subak farming, the government has also launched an integrated farming system incorporating modern and traditional farming methods.
Under this system, every area in Bali develops specific commodities and livestock products produced using organic farming techniques.
Ida Bagus Sedhawa, the head of the Bali Culture and Tourism Agency, said subak embraced social, cultural and religious aspects of the Balinese people.
