Balinese Hindus slaughter pigs ahead of Galungan

Balinese Hindus will slaughter a total of 283,000 pigs during the Penampahan Galungan, a holiday celebrated one day before Galungan holiday, on Tuesday, Antara state news agency reported.

“The pigs had been prepared since six months ago,” Putu Sumantra, head of local husbandry agency, told the news agency Tuesday.

Putu said that 15 to 20 families chip in to share a 100-kilogram pig. Residents will later cook the meat into various traditional meals.

Galungan, which celebrates the victory of dharma (good) over adharma (evil).

The local administration has eclared a three-day holiday from Tuesday to Thursday to allow residents to celebrate Galungan.
