President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono urges the National Police and the Attorney General's Office (AGO) to solve the Bank Century case and obtain all assets abroad.
He said the police and the AGO should follow up the case while waiting for the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to investigate possible legal violations done in the Century bailout.
"We ask the police and AGO, based on your authorities, to respond and follow up ... Report [the result] to the public after reporting it to me," Yudhoyono spoke at a cabinet meeting Wednesday.
He said the police and the AGO should cooperate with the court to settle the Century case, and obtain assets of former owner Robert Tantular placed abroad.
"Other crimes like fictitious letter of credit must be settled. We don't want to take and give," he said.
The president's statement came after suspicions raised by critics that the Golkar party could close the case after the departure of Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati from the cabinet.
Mulyani will serve the World Bank starting June 1 as a managing director, the second-highest position, just under Robert Zoellick.
Political parties have expressed disapproval of Mulyani's decision to bail out Century with a Rp 6.76 trillion fund. They have pressured the minister politically, despite she has yet to be proven wrong legally.
Just a day after Mulyani was announced to leave her post as finance minister, Yudhoyono formed a coalition secretariat, with him as the chairman and Aburizal Bakrie as the daily chairman.
Mulyani has publicly stated that Aburizal does not like her because of her policy.
