Students and poor residents in Makassar, South Sulawesi staged a rally Monday against the government’s plan to increase the electricity basic tariff (TDL) by 15 percent, which will take effect this July.
The students’ rally took place in front of Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Makassar on Jalan Sultan Alauddin. They managed to seize a fuel tank truck owned by state-run oil company PT Pertamina.
Meanwhile, Makassar’s poor residents addressed their protest in front of the state-run power company PLN for South, West and Southeast Sulawesi (Sultanbatara) building on Jalan Letjen Hertasning.
“It is already hard for us to fulfill our daily needs. The condition would be much worse if the government continues to increase the power tariff,” says protester Daeng Baji.
PLN’s distribution and marketing manager for Sultanbatara, Andi Lakipadada, said that the tariff hike was a nationwide plan. However, he would deliver the protesters’ request to PLN’s main office in Jakarta.
