AKARTA: A not-for-profit organization Indonesian American Education Foundation (IAEF) will hold a musical performed by more than 280 children to celebrate the life of Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid in conjunction with the National Education Day that fell on May 2.
The operetta, titled Gus Dur, The Mirror of Pluralism, will be held on Saturday, May 22, at the TVRI Auditorium in Senayan.
Performance director of the event Henny Hughes said the musical aimed to raise funds for the education of disadvantaged children or kids under special care.
Children from special school SLB Cahaya Pertiwi Bekasi, elementary school SD Don Bosco Pulomas, junior high school SMPN 85, high school SMA St. Joseph and SMAN 24, and university students from University of Indonesia and Trisakti University will perform a number of Indonesia’s regional songs and a couple of English songs such as The Beatles’ Yesterday, Henny said.
The children have been practicing very hard for six weeks, Henny said.
The show is divided into two parts. The first consists of Gus Dur’s childhood and the second, the years he lived abroad, Henny said.
“The auditorium can fit around 450 people, Henny said. Back row seats cost Rp 100,000, and middle row seats are Rp 200,000. And since this is a charity event, we are taking payments for pre-bookings now,” Henny said. — JP
