PEKANBARU: Teluk Meranti people and local environment NGO Jikalahari and Greenpeace Indonesia began building a camp in Semenanjung Kampar, Riau province, on Thursday as it burned down in what police last month said was a suspected arson case.
The camp has been dubbed by locals as the, "People's Camp for Kampar Protection", a press release made available by Greenpeace said.
The NGOs and a number of locals have been trying to protect the area, mostly peatland.
"Our people depend on the Kampar forest and river to fish and farm, as our ancestors have done for generations. We will never give this land to any company," Deli Saputra, a local leader for Kampar protection said in the release. - JP
