Jakarta Police said Friday they were facing difficulties in uncovering the motive behind a shooting incident involving an officer at ITC Mangga Dua shopping mall in North Jakarta on Thursday, since the alleged shooter is currently in a critical condition.

City police chief Insp. Gen. Wahyono said the officer, identified as First Brig. I Gede Marga Rana Jaya, was currently undergoing medical treatment after being severely beaten by an angry mob at the mall.

“[As of Friday afternoon] we have been unable to question him due to his medical condition,” Wahyono told reporters. “We have not found clues to whether he opened fire for self-defense purposes.”

Marga is a Mobile Brigade police officer from Detachment A in Kwitang, Central Jakarta.

On Thursday afternoon, he was attacked by dozens of people in Mangga Dua after firing warning shots that accidentally injured a local resident. A heated argument between him and parking attendants allegedly triggered him to open fire.
