Coordinating Public Welfare Minister Agung Laksono has supported suggestion to name keroncong maestro Gesang Martohartono as a national hero.
“I fully support the suggestion from the public,” Agung said as quoted by Antara after paying his last tribute to Gesang in Surakarta, Central Java.
Gesang passed away at the age of 92 Thursday after being hospitalized since last week.
The senior composer of keroncong (Portuguese-influenced traditional music, whose songs gained fame all the way to Japan, was best known for his classing Bengawan Solo (Solo River).
Gesang had received a number of awards for his dedication to the art.
