House of Representatives speaker Marzuki Alie, who trailed second after Anas Urbaningrum in the election of the Democratic Party's new chairman, is likely to get the backing of losing candidate Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Andi Mallarangeng for the second round of elections.
Kompas.com reported that Andi was likely to ask his constituents to give their votes to Marzuki Ali in the second round of party chairman elections.
Andi and Marzuki entered the plenary session holding up their hands together and were welcomed by their supporters. They also walked on to the stage together.
During the first round of elections, the party's House of Representatives chairman Anas Urbaningrum collected 236 votes, followed by Marzuki Alie with 209, with Andi Mallarangeng trailing at the bottom with only 82 votes.
As Anas failed to secure more than 50 percent votes, he must go to the second round of elections, challenging Marzuki Alie.
