The House of Representatives’ Commission VIII on social and religious affairs is deliberating reduction in the haj pilgrimage cost for this year, and necessary measures to improve services for the pilgrims.
Commission member Iskan Qolba Lubis said the new price would be decided during a series of meetings with the government and related parties on June 5-7.
He added there were several items that the commission deemed as overpriced, including air fares, lodging, catering and local transportation expenses, according to a survey conducted by the lawmakers.
“The items will be discussed during out hearing with the transportation minister, airline companies and other relevant institutions,” Iskan said as quoted by Antara.
Minister of Religious Affairs had said earlier the pilgrimage cost could be cut by at least US$150 from air fares. Last year’s pilgrimage cost ranged from $3,243 to $3,575 depending on embarkation points.
The Saudi Arabian government has allowed 211,000 Indonesians to perform haj pilgrimage in October.
