President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Indonesia has lost one of its best women with the demise of Hasri Ainun Habibie, the wife of the country's third president BJ Habibie.
“Ainun Habibie was not only a loving first lady, but also a sincere humanitarian champion and the mother of an exemplary family,” Yudhoyono said at the military ceremony at the funeral at Kalibata Heroes' Cemetery in South Jakarta Tuesday.
"She helped Indonesia's third president, Prof. Dr. Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie, in carrying out his important state duties," the president said.
“Ainun faithfully and trustfully accompanied the then president Habibie to get through the tough times, at a period in the country’s history when Indonesia was hit by crises in 1998 and 1999, coinciding with the start of crucial, dramatic and large-scale national reform movement,” he said.
Ainun died at Ludwig-Maximillians-Universitat Hospital in Munich, Germany, on Saturday afternoon due to an illness. She is survived by her husband and two sons. She was 72 years old.
