Your comments on the plan of the Jakarta city government to prohibit smoking inside all air-conditioned buildings in the capital.

I absolutely agree! But the question now is: Will the ban work?

I mean, as we all know, the law in Indonesia is very weak and the people are mostly not law-abiding citizens!

So I just hope that the law can work effectively.

Just increase tobacco tax so cigarettes will be expensive and less people can afford to buy them.

Yes, of course I agree, smoking in air-conditioned building is so filthy and bad for your health.

However, I have observed that in government buildings there is a lot of smoking, so I hope the mayor can enforce this in his own offices and thus show an example to others!

I am glad to hear the BPLHD is serious about this smoking ban. As a citizen of Jakarta, I understand the difficulties in enforcing this regulation. Smoking is still very socially acceptable, and second-hand smokers rarely protest.

Enforcement is a mammoth task unless it is fully supported by the community that the BPLHD is trying to protect.

Shopping center managers may comply by having a special smoking room, but they relax this rule for their food and beverage tenants.

A few days ago, I visited Cork & Screw in Plaza Indonesia, where families with children were having lunch.

The restaurant manager didn't want to ask smokers to respect other visitors' right to clean air, explaining, without apologizing, that this is management policy.

I believe he knew which law I was referring to, but feared the prospect of losing customers, as other establishments were likely to be similarly relaxed in applying the law.

The BPLHD must work together with the Association of Shopping Center Managers to design the most effective solution to reach the goal. After all, a shopping mall is a family place.

It is not impossible, Starbucks have done this for many years with great success, and it is still popular!

I wish the BPLHD every success in embarking on this very important and essential task.
