Aprilia Apsari:: Bicycles are more honest

A

prilia “Sari” Apsari, lead singer of the indie band White Shoes and The Couples Company, knows that riding a bicycle is good for her health and good for her wallet. The girl who used to ride a Vespa scooter said she has returned to her old habit, bicycling.

If I have a few days off, I work on my drawing projects or go on a date with my boyfriend. On Sunday mornings, I like to go bike riding with my best friends.  I bike around Cikini, Menteng and Senayan.

I started biking again over the past couple of months, but I’ve been riding a bike since junior high school. I commuted from home to school by bike. It was a 2.5-kilometer long trip, so I’m used to riding. When I learned that some of my best friends were biking, it was a wake-up call for me to start riding again.  Now I really enjoy it.

I use a fixed-gear bike. I choose the bike because it is more fun to ride. It is also better suited for city biking.

Riding bicycles is good for many of reasons. First, it saves me lot of money, because I don’t have to spend much on gasoline. Second, since people are the bike’s source of energy, you don’t need an engine. Riding bikes is good for our health.

If you google “bicycle”, you’ll find many wise quotations with the word bike, but not “motorbike”. The word bicycle is more honest.

I don’t bike to work because I usually share a ride with friends or we’ll take a taxi together. I used to ride a Vespa scooter, but I have to leave it at home because it is getting old and needs a lot of money to maintain.

I also spend my days off cooking with Aprimela, who is also in the band. We cook different food, from Indonesian to Italian. Sometimes we exchange recipes. We don’t have a specific menu. One thing I usually make are pancakes, because they’re simple and easy. Mela likes cooking squid with green chili. You can see how different our preferences are. We rarely cook the same food. We complement each other.
